Our Students Have Done It Again: PIXL VISN Ranked #1 Worldwide for VFX
For the second year in a row, The Rookies has ranked PIXL VISN the number one Visual Effects school in the world in the 2026 Global School Rankings.1 Our students also earned us third place worldwide in 3D Animation and seventh place in the overall Top 50 Creative Schools.
The artists behind this result arrived here as beginners. Over 18 months they learned to model, texture, light, and composite, and to keep refining a shot until it holds up to professional eyes. You can see where that leads in their finished work: photoreal cities, creatures built muscle by muscle, and lighting that reads like photography.
The Dream Our Students Work Towards
Most of the people who train here arrive with the same dream: a career making the films, series, and games they grew up with. The studios behind that work hire on evidence: a reel either holds up on a production or it does not, and for someone starting out, that is a high bar.
The Rookie Awards put that bar in the open. Every year, students around the world submit their portfolios to be assessed by professionals from the industry they want to join.
What the Global School Rankings Measure
The Global School Rankings are calculated from those portfolios, and from nothing else. More than 130 working professionals from film, games, and VFX studios score each portfolio for creativity, technical skill, presentation, and employment potential, and the rankings are recalculated from zero each year.2
For anyone choosing a school, this provides an independent assessment of the work its students can produce.
In 2026, the rankings drew on nearly 7,000 entries from more than 480 schools in 104 countries.4 The top of the 2026 Visual Effects ranking:

| 2. | SF Film School | South Korea |
| 3. | Think Tank Training Centre | Canada |

The Artists Behind the VFX Ranking
At the 2026 Rookie Awards, nine PIXL VISN artists reached the finals in Visual Effects. Among them, Peter Stumpf won Rookie of the Year in Visual Effects, and Anton Fischer earned a Highly Commended distinction and the People’s Choice Award.
Peter’s portfolio is built on cinematic environments: a dense New York-inspired city seen from a dramatic top-down perspective, and a sprawling industrial water facility at sunset, where warm light cuts through haze and smoke. The reel pairs technical control with a photographic eye, and it is the kind of work Environment and Lighting Artists do on real productions.
Anton builds creatures from the inside out. His chimpanzee, T-Rex, and Arctic wolf each begin with skeletal logic and muscle structure before sculpting, grooming, and rendering, which is why they stay convincing in close-up.
Third in the World for 3D Animation
The 2026 rankings also placed PIXL VISN third worldwide in 3D Animation, matching the academy’s best result in the category.1
The category’s two PIXL VISN finalists show the kind of work behind it. Lea Reichhart creates characters and creatures, taking her projects from modelling through texturing. Paco Arturo Abbate’s Creatures and Coffee moves from a dragon to a coffee-set CG integration, then to a marine iguana and a toad. Each piece uses texture and material response to sell weight, scale, and character.

You are not expected to arrive with these skills. The training starts with the foundations and helps you build towards more ambitious work.
This Ranking Belongs to the Whole School
First place is not reached on a few finalists alone. The Rookies ranks schools on the median score of all participating students, with additional points when entries earn awards, so the result reflects the whole group of entrants as well as the individual honours.2 This year’s students delivered both.
To every student who entered the 2026 Rookie Awards: congratulations. This first place belongs to all of you. And to our instructors, mentors, and staff: your guidance, honest feedback, and support helped our students bring their work to this level.
Together, you are the reason PIXL VISN is number one again.
Nine Years on the World Rankings
PIXL VISN first entered the rankings in 2018 and placed sixth in Visual Effects worldwide. The record since:3
Fourteen top-10 placements across two categories in nine years.
The 2026 rankings also placed PIXL VISN seventh in The Rookies’ overall Top 50 Creative Schools list, which spans all twelve disciplines, from VFX and animation to game design and concept art. It is the academy’s first top-10 placement in that list.1
Recognition across nine years gives us confidence in the training and support that help students with different strengths and starting points grow as artists.
When Andrei and I started PIXL VISN, we wanted to build a school that would prepare people for a career in the industry, with practical training and guidance from people who knew the work firsthand. I don’t think either of us imagined where that would lead. Seeing our students’ work earn the school a place among the world’s best means a great deal to me. It makes me proud of what we’ve built together, and even prouder of the artists who have come through our doors. I told more of that story in last year’s post.
How We Help Students Meet the Bar
A reel that holds up on a production is a high bar, and the training is built around reaching it. At PIXL VISN, you learn by creating: our 18-month full-time diploma is taught in English at our academy in Cologne, Germany.
You begin with the foundations of 3D animation and visual effects, learning how the different stages of a production fit together. As your skills develop, you apply them to increasingly ambitious projects, working with industry-standard software, meeting deadlines, and improving your work through feedback.
Your instructors are working industry professionals: artists and supervisors with experience on feature films, episodic series, commercials, and game projects, teaching the disciplines they work in. They help you understand what needs improving, why it matters, and how to approach the next version, and their experience shows you what studios expect.
That broad foundation also helps you discover where your strengths lie and which discipline you want to pursue. Peter found his direction in environments and lighting; Anton found his in creatures.
Throughout the training, you work towards a professional demo reel: a short selection of your strongest work that demonstrates your creative judgement, technical skills, and strengths in the discipline you want to pursue. The portfolios recognised by The Rookies show what this training can help students achieve.
